Fly Fishing Line Management - Basic

Monday, September 19, 2016

Managing your line is one of the most important things you can do to land more trophy trout. Read on for more information.

The Basics

Controlling your line while fishing on a stream is much different than line management when practicing or lake fishing. Navigating the river, stream currents, obstructions, fly selection and fly weights all have a part to play in proper line management.

  • Make sure to have enough line off the reel to make the cast you need to make.
  • Make sure the amount of line past your rod tip while in the ready position is not too long or short.  Give or take, it is approximately 8 to 9 feet of fly line and the leader to make a manageable amount of line.
  • Try not to hold more than one loop of available fly line. Too many loops will cause tangles for the beginner fisherman.
  • If there is current where you are wading its best to get all of your running line next to your legs so it can shoot through your guides easily if needed.
