While winter slows fly fishing across Montana, it’s one of the busiest times of year behind the scenes. A successful guiding season doesn’t begin when the rivers open—it starts months earlier, long before the first spring trip launches in Bozeman or along the Missouri River.
Boat Maintenance
Boat maintenance is always first on the list. Drift boats are thoroughly inspected, cleaned, patched, and upgraded. Oarlocks are checked, anchor systems rebuilt, and trailers serviced. When clients step into the boat in spring, everything should feel dialed and dependable. Reliability on the water starts in the shop during winter.
TIme to Restock
Winter is when we restock proven patterns and retire flies that earned their keep the previous season. Tailwater nymphs, midges, sow bugs, PMDs, caddis, terrestrials, and streamers are reorganized by river and hatch. Every fly box has a purpose, because efficiency matters when you’re chasing trout on big Montana rivers.
Supplies and More Supplies
Gear preparation goes far beyond flies. Winter is also the time we order new supplies and replace worn equipment. Fresh fly lines, new rods, leaders, tippet, split shot, indicators, and other terminal tackle are all stocked and tested. These details may seem small, but they make a major difference in creating smooth, productive days on the water—especially when conditions change quickly.

River Studies
River knowledge never stops evolving. Winter months are spent reviewing flow data, studying runoff patterns, and mentally replaying the season—what worked, what didn’t, and where trout consistently showed up on the Missouri, Yellowstone, Madison, and Gallatin Rivers. That information shapes our strategy long before the first cast is made.
