Southwestern Montana's Premier Fly Fishing Guide Service

FAQs For Advanced Anglers

How early should I book my Montana guide trip?

Many of our return clientele book up to a year in advance, so you should book as early as possible. This will insure that you can reserve any specific lodging and reserve the most experienced guides for your trip.

What gear should I bring on my Montana guided trip?

We generally fish with 9’ 5 or 6 weight rods. On smaller rivers and streams you can use a lighter rod, but for the most part a 5 or 6 weight rod will cover most circumstances. We use waders early and late (Spring and Fall) in the season. During the summertime, you will be more comfortable wet wading in quick dry pants or shorts. We can provide you with fly rods and waders and boots if needed, at no extra charge to you if you choose not to travel with your own gear.

What type of flies should I bring?

We include all flies needed to have a successful day on the water. You are welcome to bring your own flies as well, we love seeing new patterns and our clients favorite flies from their home waters.

Can I request a specific river or stream?

Of course. If you have a bucket list that you would like to fish please let us know. But, please also understand that we want you to have the best experience possible and we might suggest a different area due to current water or weather conditions.

We have an odd number of anglers, what are our options?

If you would like a float trip, our boats allow for two anglers plus the guide max. If you have an odd number in your group you would need multiple boats to accommodate everyone. We do offer a full day wade trip with up to three anglers. We can accommodate groups from 1-20 anglers, just give us a call and we'll put together a great plan for any size of group.

What kind of boats do you use for your guide trips?

For the majority of our float trips we use Mackenzie style drift boats. They are about 16’ and they fit two anglers and the guide comfortably. On occasion and we will use our rafts with a size range from 13-16’. Specifically used to for smaller waters or specific rivers where drift boats cannot be used.

What is the booking process?

Once we receive your deposit, we will follow up with a conformation email showing all monies paid, balance due and all the information about your trip. From a week out to a few days before your trip, we will contact you and confirm the plans for your day. The balance of your trip is due at the completion of the trip.

Do you have a fly shop?

We do not have a brick and mortar store, we are a guide service only. We offer professional guided fly fishing trips all over southwestern Montana. We won’t try to sell you sell you any new equipment or any extras, just provide you with a quality fly fishing experience.

Gratuity for the guide?

Our fly fishing guides work hard to make sure you get the most out of every fishing day. Even though guide tips are never expected they are always appreciated. 15%-20% of the price of the guide trip is common, but anything extra that shows your appreciation is greatly valued. Tips help out the guide to pay for fuel, flies, shuttles, etc. Cash tips paid directly to the guide are preferred, but we can also apply it to your final bill.

Trip insurance?

If you are concerned about unforeseen conflicts with your trip schedule, we highly recommend getting trip insurance. For a reasonable fee, these insurance packages can reimburse you for flights, lodging and guide days lost. We suggest using IMG travel insurance for your needs.
